The Fu 7 configuration

This receiver was a part of the Fu 7 configuration, used for communication with aircraft equpped with the FuG 17 radio communication system.

The Fu 7 configuration was established in 1937 with the Ukw.E.d and 20W.S.d, followed by the Ukw.E.d1 in 1939. It included the Umformer EUa (1-4) and U20a, connecting cables and a 1,4 meter antenna at the rear of the vehicle. This was the setup of the Fu7 equipped command vehicle. The range for voice communication (A3) with airplanes was about 50 km with an airborne radio system at an altitude of 500 meters and 6-10 km with airplanes flying at lower altitudes. The range can be extended by about 20% if used with a 4-meter sectional antenna. As already stated in section 22.5 (Befehlspanzer III), the estimated ratio of Fu7 units to Fu 8 equipment in the command tanks was about 1:10, therefore, that by 1945 relatively few Lorenz Fu7 units had been built.

Ukw.E.d1

The Ukw.E.d was replaced by the Ukw.E.d1 around 1939. It had the same face plate and control panel, but a completely differnent technological design on the inside. Instead of the previous cast chassis, the receiving section of the aircraft transceiver FuG17 (same frequency range) was set behind the front panel with mechanical adjustment and the frequency and fine adjustment. This new FuG17 receiver was configured with new vacuum tubes - RV12P2000, had 11 circuits and automatic gain control in four stages. Because of the more efficient UKW properties of the RV12P2000 over the RV12P4000 tube, the Ukw.E.d1 had better sensititivity that it's forebearer. Also the selectivity was better (11 vs. 8 circuits) and probably the gain control (4 vs. 3 tubes).
